Commercial development in haptics has moved in waves. Eccentric rotating mass (ERM) motors dominated the haptics industry from the first rise of haptics in consumer products in the 1990s through to the early 2010s. In 2015, Apple launched its Taptic Engine, driving a significant shift from the incumbent vibration motors toward linear resonant actuators (LRAs) throughout the market. Today, it is seen that LRAs are replacing ERM motors in more spaces, such as in handheld consoles, VR controllers, and many other types of devices, beyond just where it all started in the smartphone.
