Vancouver Rapid Transit Line wins top national engineering award

The 2010 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards were presented last night at a gala dinner at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier hotel in Ottawa.

Nearly 200 guests were in attendance including parliamentarians and other dignitaries.
Held annually for 42 years, the awards are Canada’s highest mark of recognition for projects by Canadian consulting engineering firms. The program is held jointly by the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies (ACEC)/L’Association des firmes d’ingénieurs-conseils (AFIC) and Canadian Consulting Engineer magazine.
This year a record 73 engineering projects were entered.
Two special awards, and 10 awards of excellence, were given.
Schreyer Award (for most technically innovative project):
– Canada Line Rapid Transit Project, Vancouver, B.C.
SNC-Lavalin Inc.
Measuring over 18 kilometres, the automated rapid transit line connects downtown Vancouver with the Vancouver International Airport and the City of Richmond. The $1.9-billion project includes 16 stations, as well as water crossings, and elevated and underground sections. SNC-Lavalin Inc. designed, built and commissioned the line 110 days ahead of a 51-month schedule.
Tree For Life Award (for outstanding environmental stewardship):
– Pine Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, Calgary, Alberta.

The new plant is a shining example of preserving natural resources while establishing new effluent quality standards. It processes 100 million litres a day (100 ML/d) using next-generation technologies such as Biological Nutrient Removal and Ultra-Violet disinfection. The facilities’ sustainable features also include energy management, water re-use and green roofs.

The judging panel for the above awards consisted of 11 distinguished engineers from academia, government and industry. The jury chair was Mr. Claude Benton Robert, ing. of Ottawa.
Beaubien Award:
The Beaubien Award is given by ACEC/AFIC to individuals for exceptional service to the association and the consulting engineering industry. There were two winners this year.
Dave Chalcroft, FEC, FCAE, P.Eng.
During a 37-year career with UMA Engineering Ltd., Dave Chalcroft managed many challenging projects. He was Senior Vice-President responsible for UMA’s operations in southern Alberta and for international projects in California, India, Uzbekistan, and St. Lucia, and Senior Vice-President in charge of UMA’s national Earth and Water Division. Since retiring from full-time duties in 2002 with UMA Engineering Inc., Dave has operated as an independent consulting engineer overseeing a variety of projects.
He served as President for Consulting Engineers of Alberta (1994-1995) and as Chair of ACEC (2000-2001). He played an integral role in mobilizing a fund-raising campaign for RedR Canada.
Andrew Steeves, P.Eng.
Andrew Steeves, P.Eng., has been part of the ADI Group of Companies for over 30 years, and is currently Strategic Senior Advisor with Trow ADI. Previously he held several senior positions with the firm including Vice-President Administration, Manager of the Public Works Division and Secretary-Treasurer.
Andrew is past-Chair of ACEC and a winner of the ACEC Chairman’s Award for his efforts promoting Qualifications-Based Selection. He is also past-President of the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – New Brunswick.
Over recent years, Andrew has been involved in FIDIC (the international association for consulting engineers) serving as Co-Chair of the 2008 FIDIC Conference in Quebec City.
