Vytran introduces the "LFS-4000," a precision optical fiber splicer for standard, large-diameter and specialty fibers.

The LFS-4000 is a dedicated process tool ideal for volume manufacturing fiber assemblies for fiber laser, sensing, medical device, defense and aerospace, fiber-based instrumentation, and research and development applications. Vytran will feature the system in several upcoming product demonstrations in the United States, Europe and Canada.

The LFS-4000 uses Vytran’s filament fusion technology to produce low-loss splices on fibers ranging from 125 to 900 microns in diameter. It can be used for standard and specialty fibers such as doped fibers, polarization maintaining (PM) fibers, photonic crystal fiber (PCF), highly stressed fibers and non-circular shapes. Its PC-based laptop software features two screens – one tailored for product development that allows all of the unit’s functionalities, and another simplified screen that allows only basic operator interface for volume manufacturing.

Vytran’s LFS-4000, GPX-3400 glass processor, LDC-400 fiber cleaver, and PTR-200 series of fiber recoaters and proof testers make up a suite of complementary products. These products facilitate early process development through manufacturing for applications such as splicing fiber assemblies and creating fused components and fiber terminations. The LFS-4000, GPX-3400 and LDC-400 share a fiber holding block to ensure mechanical fiber integrity. LFS and GPX systems also share common software and an application library to streamline customers’ processes from development through production.
