QUEBEC (CNW Telbec) - Fiso Technologies, a subsidiary of Roctest Ltd. and a manufacturer of fibre optic sensors and measurement systems, was recently awarded a purchasing contract by Schlumberger Technology Corp.

Fiso designs, manufactures and markets fibre optic sensors and high-precision measuring instruments.Fiso’s UMI signal conditioner, FOP pressure sensor and FOT-L temperature sensor will be used for coiled tubing activities, an important segment of the oil and gas market. The challenge lies mainly on integrating the fibre optic sensors within considerable depths and efficiently measuring pressure and temperature, the fundamental parameters to monitor oil fields.
Coiled tubing enables relatively complex intervention techniques to be applied safely under live well conditions. It consists of lowering a pipe into the well to perform various operations such as pumping fluids, manipulating downhole tools, running logs and even drilling. Both pressure and temperature are very important parameters in order to measure the well’s characteristics along with the total deliverability of the well.
The UMI signal conditioner allows one single unit for data retrieval of both pressure and temperature and can easily be operated at distance, eliminating the necessity of integrating downhole electronics. Fiso’s fibre optic sensors are intrinsically safe, offer immunity to electromagnetic interference and operate at high temperatures.
According to Francois Pelletier, vice-president of sales and marketing at Fiso, "This contract is a first major breakthrough for us in the oil and gas market, and clearly demonstrates that Fiso’s technology is well adapted to this industry. The agreement includes minimal volume purchases to be delivered over the next three years and involves active research and development on our part in order to meet Schlumberger’s specifications proper to this application."
